Another wave of HAZMAT training came to Bedford as General Liquids Canada created a scenario to test the responders.

Upon arrival, command crews met with staff.  Fire responded due to a call regarding a vehicle crashing into a building known to house radioactive materials.  Not much more detail was given so the HAZMAT responders had to do a recon, monitoring the toxicity of the air as they approached the scene with various meters.

Once a safe zone was determined, a deacon site aecommand site was established while a HRFE drone was deployed to gather more detail about the scene.

Firefighters were dressed in suits appropriate for the radioactive scene and approached with metering devices.

They discovered a box with a radioactive symbol in the truck and investigated, determining the box was not a significant threat.

They proceeded to investigate both inside and outside of the building, taking air samples along the way.

Reporting their findings, they returned to the decon area where they were tested for radiation levels and safely removed from their gear which was secured in special containers.

Combined with staff procedures, appropriate steps to seal the area for containment and secure the scene is determined and action taken.

With the realistic HAZMAT training, both the HRFE and staff at General Liquids Canada share and learn knowledge about each others tactics incase of a real situation, allowing both crews to work quickly and safely together, benefitting everyone.
