Police caution public not to share information contrary to the Youth Criminal Justice Act

Halifax Regional Police has been made aware of social media posts where youths charged in a recent homicide may have been identified.

We are urging the public to use caution in distributing or sharing such information. If a social media post identifies a youth being dealt with under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), that constitutes publication and may be grounds for a charge of breaching the publication ban provisions of the YCJA.

For more detail in relation to the YCJA, please see the government of Canada website: https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/y-1.5/index.html

We would also remind the public that the investigation of the incident is ongoing and that sharing or publishing of images has the potential to negatively impact the investigation. Anyone who has information in relation to the incident who has not spoken with police is asked to call 902-490-5020.
