Water leak at Abbie J. Lane Memorial Building results in relocation of patients
A water leak midday on Friday at the Abbie J. Lane Memorial Building has resulted in the movement of some patients from the Mental Health and Addictions inpatient unit.
Water damage is still being assessed, but at this time five patients have been discharged or transferred to other beds within the system. The possibility exists that other patients will also need to be relocated.
The leak has caused some inpatient beds to be temporarily taken out of service, which may add additional system pressures.
Nova Scotia Health staff are currently in the process of notifying the families and/or next-of-kin contacts for those patients affected by the relocation efforts.
Despite the physical disruption to bed areas, access to care and the safety of patients and staff remain paramount in all efforts as staff work through these challenges.
A timeline for repairs and a return to the unit for patients is still being determined.
Infection Prevention and Control, Occupational Health Safety and Wellness, and Environmental Services teams are on site for enhanced cleaning and to ensure workplace safety for those providing care.
Nova Scotia Health commends staff at the site for their quick response and would like to thank teams across the province for working together to ensure patient safety.
