Storm impacts on municipal services | Tuesday, February 13, 10:15 p.m.
The Halifax Regional Municipality is providing the following updates on municipal service impacts.
Residents asked to avoid unnecessary travel
Residents are asked to avoid unnecessary travel for their own safety due to poor driving conditions and to allow crews to continue snow clearing operations safely.
Crews are focused on clearing Priority 1 routes, which include main arterials, emergency routes and Halifax Transit routes. Crews will also continue to clear Priority 2 routes, which include residential streets and gravel roads.
Halifax Transit
Residents are advised that Halifax Transit is suspending bus service due to weather conditions. Operations will resume when it is safe to do so.
For the latest updates on Halifax Transit service, follow @hfxtransit on X and the website.
Emergency Operations Centre open
The municipality activated its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) today at 8:30 a.m. The EOC is staffed by employees from across the organization and provides a central place to coordinate emergency management.
Municipal offices
All municipal offices, including in-person Customer Service Centres and the Planning & Development permit office, will be delaying opening on Wednesday, February 14, until 10 a.m., with a further update by 9 a.m.
Employees who can work from home are being asked to do so.
All essential services, as well as 311, winter operations and Halifax Transit will maintain operations.
Safety is the municipality’s top priority. Delaying opening will facilitate clearing efforts by crews and ensure a safer commute for our employees and residents.
Parks & Recreation
Many municipal recreation facilities will delay opening on Wednesday, February 14. An update will be provided by 8 a.m. with a potential re-opening at 10 a.m. regarding whether rentals, facilities and programming activities will continue as scheduled.
For the most up-to-date information, follow @hfxrec on X or call your local recreation centre.
Solid Waste
Curbside collection of solid waste is continuing as scheduled on Wednesday, February 14. Due to the winter storm, residents are asked to not place waste curbside until tomorrow morning so as to not impede snow clearing operations overnight. Residents are reminded that collection can begin as early as 7 a.m. Read on for more information on solid waste service disruptions today.
Parking
The overnight winter parking ban will be enforced from 1 to 6 a.m. (in both Zone 1 – Central and Zone 2 – Non-Central), to allow crews to properly clear streets and sidewalks.
Residents are able to determine which zone they’re in by searching their address using the interactive tool available here.
Support for those experiencing homelessness
The Halifax Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) team is conducting wellness checks to assess the safety of anyone who chooses not to leave an outdoor sheltering location. GSAR is also offering transportation for those sleeping rough to emergency shelters during this weather event.
