Police charge woman with arson

Police have charged a woman in relation to an arson that occurred earlier this week in Halifax.

At approximately 8:37 a.m. on August 4, police, Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency and Emergency Health Services (EHS) responded to a fire at a residence in the 3400 block of Barrington Street in Halifax.

EHS transported a woman to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation as a result of the fire. The fire was deemed to be an arson.

Investigators in the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division have charged Shawna Clairise Hastings, 28, of Halifax, with one count of arson – disregard for human life. She will appear in court at a later date.

There was one injury and no fatalities.

The ignition source was undetermined. The area of origin was determined to be a bedroom.  

There were operating smoke alarms. 

The cause of this fire is classified as INCENDIARY.
