The Truro Police Service would like to remind motorists that Nova Scotia law mandates that drivers must stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and its stop arm extended

While the fine for the first offence could be $410 and six demerit points on your license, the safety of our children needs to be our primary concern, and this is the responsibility of all motorists. Please take extra caution when driving, particularly on bus routes and in school zones. Best practices:

• Always stop if there’s a school bus with the red lights flashing and stop arm extended.
• Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicle.
• Motorists may begin moving only when the red flashing lights are turned off, the stop arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins to move.
• Never pass on the right side of the bus, where children enter or exit. This is illegal and can have tragic results.
• Recognize that the greatest risk to a child is on the approach to the school bus and when leaving one.
• Slow Down, and watch for children playing and gathering near bus stops; and
• Don’t drive distracted and be alert.
