Municipality prepares for impacts of Tropical Storm Philippe
The Halifax Regional Municipality is closely monitoring Tropical Storm Philippe as it approaches the region this weekend. Municipal service adjustments will continue to be made as needed throughout the weather event.
Residents are also advised of municipal program and service level adjustments for the upcoming Thanksgiving long weekend, including the holiday on Monday, October 9.
Parks & Recreation
The Halifax Public Gardens will be closed on the morning of Sunday, October 8, to allow cleanup and safety assessments to be completed. An update will be provided for the park reopening.
Helping support those experiencing homelessness
Given the recent change in the forecast, emergency shelters are not planned over the weekend. The Province of Nova Scotia is working with their service providers to expand the current services as needed to ensure those experiencing homelessness have access to supports if they need them.
Municipal staff and Street Outreach Navigators will also conduct regularly-scheduled visits to encampment sites to check on those sheltering in these locations and will be prepared to provide additional assistance as required.
Be prepared
Residents are asked to move patio furniture inside and remove anything that high winds could pick up, such as garbage bins, flower pots, umbrellas, toys, temporary signage, sports equipment, and any other loose objects located near the right of way.
To reduce the likelihood of flooding, residents are asked to clear debris from catch basins located near their property prior to the storm if they are able to do so safely.
As high storm surges are expected, all residents should stay away from the shoreline and low-lying areas. Be ready to move inland or to higher ground in case of flooding.
