Nova Scotia RCMP reminds hunters of firearm safety
The Nova Scotia RCMP would like to remind hunters of safe and responsible practices related to firearms.
Fall has arrived in Nova Scotia and with that, various hunting seasons. Every year, the Nova Scotia RCMP responds to reports associated to the use of firearms during hunting season, including discharges too near residential areas, accidental discharges, and serious and fatal injuries.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind when transporting and handling your firearm:
- Ensure your firearm is safely stored in your vehicle when transporting: Storing, transporting and displaying firearms | Royal Canadian Mounted Police (rcmp-grc.gc.ca)
- Know your surroundings and stay away from residential neighbourhoods and areas;
- Handle firearms with care and attention at all times: Firearms safety | Royal Canadian Mounted Police (rcmp-grc.gc.ca)
- Never shoot unless you’re sure of your target and what lies beyond
- Tell someone where you will be hunting and when you will be returning
- Carry a survival kit and a small first aid kit with you at all times
- Never drink or consume drugs while hunting
