Police lay firearm charges

Police have laid firearm charges after a search of a residence in Dartmouth on the weekend.

On August 27 at approximately 4:10 a.m. members of the Guns and Gangs Unit, along with members of the Emergency Response Team, conducted a search of a residence and vehicles on Mountain Avenue in relation to an ongoing investigation. Officers arrested two people at the scene and seized two firearms and ammunition.

James Albert Riley, 26, was scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court yesterday to face charges of:

  • Possession of firearm obtained by commission of an offence
  • Possession of a restricted or prohibited firearm with ammunition
  • Possession of a firearm in a vehicle
  • Possession of a restricted or prohibited firearm or ammunition with no license (x2)
  • Possession of firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized (x2)
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm contrary to regulations (x2)
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm (x2)
  • Possession for a firearm contrary to a court order (x4)

The second accused is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court at a later date to face charges of:

  • Possession of firearm obtained by commission of an offence
  • Possession of a restricted or prohibited firearm with ammunition
  • Possession of a restricted or prohibited firearm or ammunition with no license
  • Possession of firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm contrary to regulations
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm
