Residents invited to help identify hazards, risks and vulnerabilities in communities

The Halifax Regional Municipality is seeking input from residents on hazards, risks and vulnerabilities across communities. Feedback will inform the development of a comprehensive Hazard, Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (HRVA), allowing the municipality to help plan for emergencies.

The HRVA analyzes potential negative outcomes during emergency events, such as extreme weather. For example, residents may identify areas that are prone to flooding, have poor cellular coverage, lack egress routes, have coastal erosion or have experienced any historical emergencies.

The objectives of the HRVA are to increase community and organizational resiliency to climate, technological, human and conflict-related hazards, by informing and influencing decision-making and project-planning. This includes identifying critical infrastructure and risk mitigation measures, enhancing community awareness and providing education.

The municipality has launched a survey and is hosting in-person sessions across the Halifax region to collect feedback from residents beginning September 5.

This HRVA will update the municipality’s previous HRVA from 2016.
