New Glasgow Regional Police charges man for leaving dog in hot vehicle
New Glasgow Regional Police has charged a 65-year-old Colchester County man for leaving a dog in a vehicle in New Glasgow parking lot.
On July 18 at 11:45 a.m., New Glasgow Regional Police were notified of a dog in distress in a parking lot on Westville Road in New Glasgow. Police opened the vehicle to care for the dog and at the same time the owner returned to his vehicle. The dog owner was issued a Summary Offence Ticket by police for Causing an Animal Distress under section 26(1) of the Animal Protection Act. This offence carries a fine of $697.50.
July 18 was a warm day and even with the windows partially open, a parked vehicle can quickly become an oven and can be fatal for human and especially animals. With warm temperatures pet owners should not leave their pets unattended in vehicles, even for a few minutes.
Police across Nova Scotia offer suggestions if you come across an animal in a vehicle that appears to be in distress:
Look for the owner of the car notify store management or security.
If you cannot locate the owner, call your local police and stay at the vehicle until police arrive. Do not contact police unless the animal is obviously distressed.
If you are unsure if an animal is in distress, call the Nova Scotia SPCA at 1-888-703-7722. Follow up by filing a report with the Nova Scotia SPCA either online or by phone, and be sure to note the vehicle’s licence plate number.
