Applications for the 2023 Property Tax Rebate for Seniors Open July 1

Applications for the Property Tax Rebate for Seniors, which helps seniors on a low-income with their municipal residential property taxes, open Saturday, July 1.

The program offers eligible seniors a rebate of half of their property taxes, up to $800.

“The Property Tax Rebate for Seniors is another step we are taking to help Nova Scotians offset the increasing costs of living,” said Colton LeBlanc, Minister of Service Nova Scotia. “I encourage everyone who is eligible to apply.”

The eligibility criteria include:
— 2022 municipal residential property taxes paid in full
— applicant’s name is included on the property taxes
— the applicant receives or is eligible to receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) or Guaranteed Income Supplement – Allowance from Service Canada.

Applications are open until December 31. People who received the rebate last year will receive an application by mail starting next week.

The application also includes the option to apply for the upcoming Heating Assistance Rebate Program.

The Province reminds Nova Scotians that the names of rebate programs can be used as part of phishing or other schemes to collect people’s personal information such as social insurance numbers and banking information. The provincial government would never call, email or text asking for this type of information or send payments through electronic funds transfers.

— more than 18,000 senior households received the rebate in 2022
