Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit charge man with Murder

The Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit has charged a man with Murder in relation to a homicide that occurred in the small community of Labelle near Liverpool.

On May 31, 2023, at approximately 3:45 p.m., a 50-year-old man arrived at Nova Scotia RCMP Headquarters in Dartmouth and stated that he had just killed a female. The man was immediately arrested and Queens District RCMP conducted a wellbeing check on the 62-year-old woman. Sadly, RCMP officers located her deceased.

Jeffrey Allen Ohrt, 50, of Liverpool, has been charged with First Degree Murder. He remains in custody and will appear in Bridgewater Provincial Court today.

The investigation is being led by the Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit, with assistance from RCMP Forensic Identification Services, Queens District RCMP and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner’s Office.

The victim was known to Ohrt and we believe this to be a targeted incident.

Pictou County District RCMP investigating arsons

Pictou County District RCMP is investigating three separate arson scenes in Pictou County.

At approximately 1:30 a.m. this morning, Pictou County District RCMP and fire, responded to a report of a structure fire on Hwy. 4 in Alma. RCMP officers learned that a commercial structure was on fire and the Alma Volunteer Fire Department was able to extinguish it.

At approximately 2:25 a.m., a second fire was reported on Granton Abercrombie Rd. in Granton. RCMP officers learned that a green bin at the side of the road had been lit on fire. The fire department was able to successfully extinguish the fire.

Then, at approximately 2:40 a.m., a third fire was reported on Mount William Rd. in Mount william. RCMP officers learned that recycling bags at the side of the road had been lit on fire. RCMP officers were able to successfully extinguish the fire.

Initial investigation has determined that all three fires were the result of arson.

The investigation is ongoing.
