Halifax District RCMP investigate fatal collision on Highway 3

Halifax District RCMP fatal collision investigation update

The RCMP has received new information into an investigation that began on July 7, when a 28-year-old man died following a motor vehicle collision on St. Margaret’s Bay Rd. in Hubley. The man who was arrested at the scene has been charged with several offences, however police have not charged him with impaired driving.​

The RCMP is continuing to​ work towards determining the identity of the driver through​ investigation. The new information came from witnesses who came forward​ last evening. Additional charges may be laid as the investigation progresses.

The individual who was arrested, 28-year-old Corey Richard Patrick Blinkhorn from Howie​ Center,​ was held in police​ custody overnight and is currently facing​ four counts of Breach of Conditions, one count of Theft of Motor Vehicle, and one count of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime. He appeared in Halifax Provincial Court today and was held in custody.​

The investigation is ongoing.

At 5:02 a.m., Halifax District RCMP responded to a single vehicle collision near 3618 St. Margaret’s Bay Rd. in Hubley. The caller heard a loud bang and called 911 to report the collision.

When police arrived on scene, they found a man crouching in a wooded area near the vehicle. He was showing signs of impairment by alcohol and was arrested. He required medical treatment and was taken to hospital by EHS for treatment of his injuries. He provided blood samples to police at the hospital. The 28-year-old man from Cape Breton is currently in RCMP custody. He is facing a number of charges, including Impaired Operation of a Conveyance Causing Death and Theft of Motor Vehicle. Additional charges are expected to be laid as the investigation progresses.

One deceased victim was located in the vehicle. First responders were attempting to extricate him from the vehicle, however he died at the scene. The deceased is a 28-year-old man who had been living in Halifax. RCMP officers at the scene obtained information that there may have been three other passengers in the vehicle. Police are concerned for their well-being and want to ensure they receive the medical treatment they require. In addition, police are asking them to come forward, to assist with the investigation. RCMP officers have also received information that two females, one of whom was driving a black VW Jetta, came to the scene before police arrival, and then left the area. Investigators want to speak to these people to assist with the investigation. Halifax District RCMP can be contacted at 902-490-5020.

Highway 3 was closed in the area since the collision occurred. An RCMP Traffic Analyst is assisting with the investigation. Highway 3 re-opened at 1 p.m. today.
