Nova Scotia RCMP Commercial Crime Section charge woman in multi-million-dollar fraud

The Nova Scotia RCMP Commercial Crime Section has charged a woman in a multi-million-dollar fraud.

On December 11, 2019, Millbrook RCMP received a report from the Chief and Council of the Millbrook First Nation, of a possible fraud committed by a previous employee. At the time of the initial report, the fraud was believed to have been in excess of one million dollars.

The investigation was taken over by the Nova Scotia RCMP Commercial Crime Section and was assisted by RCMP Digital Forensic Services and the Public Services and Procurement Canada’s Forensic Accounting Management Group (FAMG).

Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that the ex-employee had either stolen or misappropriated over four million dollars, over a four-year period between January 2016 and December 2019.

On March 17, 2023, Dawn Ellis-Abbott, 42, of Bible Hill, was arrested in connection with this investigation. She was later released on conditions.

Ellis-Abbott has since been formally charged with Fraud over $5,000, Theft over $5,000 and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5,000. She will appear in Truro Provincial Court on May 24, 2023, at 9:30 a.m.

The RCMP would like to thank the Millbrook First Nation Chief and Council for their cooperation and support of our investigation.
