Saw-whets are a very small species of owl, generally weighing in at a mere 80 grams (~3 oz) on average and standing only about 7 inches in height. They are nocturnal, so they can often be hard to spot on a walk in the woods, since during the day these small owls roost silently in dense conifers.

Fun fact: mother saw-whet owls care for their young until their feathers grow in at around 18 days, then they permanently leave the nestlings for the father to care for while they go off to roost somewhere new – sometimes with a new mate!
