March Success Story – Arielle

Arielle is from Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, graduated from Camp Courage class of 2009 and currently works as a Registered Nurse in an ICU, caring for critically ill patients suffering from spinal and brain injuries, traumas, and burns. Arielle is working toward becoming part of the LifeFlight team. She also works in the community as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE), providing medical and forensic care to survivors. Arielle was a Volunteer Firefighter and hopes to return to volunteering once she lives in a community where that will be possible. This is what she had to say about her camp experience. Camp Courage first interested me because I was a junior volunteer firefighter who wanted to explore the service a bit more. I went into the Camp excited, ready for a challenge, and excited to meet some like-minded girls.

Throughout the Camp, I met some amazing female role models across the gross majority of first responder services. The discrimination and challenges they faced in their early careers were transformed into lessons and goal teaching for us young girls. The week also included so many hands-on experiences that were designed to learn and challenge one’s fears, develop teamwork skills, and build one’s confidence. These skills were balanced out with a goal and confidence-building workshops.
I left the Camp humbled, stronger, equipped with tools for success, and having made new friendships. I have since returned to the Camp as a mentor and past camper a number of times.

I cannot stress how crucial these sorts of learning opportunities are for young women in today’s world and political climate. This Camp helps to empower future generations of women who have so much to contribute to their communities.

Sincerely, Arielle
