Protecting Private Property from Potentially Damaged Plumbing

Due to the extremely cold temperatures, some Halifax Water customers are reporting the loss of water service due to internal plumbing issues.

To help property owners minimize potential flooding inside of their homes, Halifax Water is recommending customers check to see if they are within a known water service shutdown areas (viewed here: halifaxwater.ca/notices)

If you are inside a known water service shutdown area listed, Halifax Water crews are already working to return your area to service as soon as possible.

If you do not have water service and are not in a known water service shutdown area, Halifax Water recommends that you close the water shut-off valve controlling water flow inside your home.

By closing this valve, you can help minimize flooding from frozen, cracked, or split plumbing during the recent extreme cold temperatures. The water shut-off valve can usually be found at the point the water line enters your home, between the entry point and the water meter. If your shut-off valve doesn’t work, please contact Halifax Water at 902-420-9287.

Halifax Water highly recommends testing to see if your water service has returned and checking for leaks in your plumbing as temperatures rise and time goes on.

If you do find leaks inside your home, Halifax Water recommends that you leave this value shut off until your plumbing has been thoroughly inspected/repaired. We recommend hiring a qualified professional to complete this work.

It is recommended that customers ensure there is a safe heat source in the area where your water service lateral enters your home – usually in a basement or utility closet near your water meter. This will help to thaw your water service lateral.
