Reset your clocks, change your batteries

Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency (HRFE) wishes to remind residents to ‘fall back’ tomorrow before heading to bed.

When residents turn their clocks back an hour, they should also change the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Also, residents are reminded to check the expiry date on the back of their alarms. The National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be replaced every ten years.

Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms should be tested once a month.

HRFE investigators frequently discover smoke alarms didn’t sound when they followed up on serious fires. Usually, it’s either because the alarm was disconnected, the batteries were dead or they were taken out and never replaced.
