Plan ahead for a safe Halloween

With just five more sleeps until Halloween night, ghosts and goblins are planning their devilish routes. So, the Nova Scotia RCMP is reminding everyone to stay in good spirits as youngsters take to the streets.

Whether you’re planning to collect treats at a few neighbours’ homes or headed to a party, here are some tips to keep you and your children safe as you head out for the evening.

Parents/guardians:

  • Plan ahead to make sure your child’s costume is visible in the dark. Bright colours, flashlights and reflective tape are good options to help someone stand out against the dark night.
  • If your child is planning to wear a mask around their eyes, test it out to make sure they can see in all directions. If possible, use face paint instead.
  • If your child will be trick-or-treating without an adult, make sure they have a buddy to go with and work with them to create a defined route and curfew. When kids have their journey planned ahead of time, it can help protect them from getting lost.
  • Do a traffic safety refresher before the kids head out. With the excitement of Halloween, it’s easy to forget simple things like looking both ways before crossing the street.

Motorists:

  • Avoid driving in residential areas if possible.
  • If you must drive in residential areas, plan extra time to get to your destination and drive slowly.
  • Keep your eyes peeled for trick-or-treaters who may be wearing dark clothing. With the excitement of Halloween, they may dart out in front of your vehicle and you may need to stop abruptly.
  • As always, wear a seat belt, drive sober and stay focused on the road ahead.

Throughout October, the RCMP will be sharing Halloween safety tips using the hashtag #SafeHalloween2022 at https://www.facebook.com/rcmpns/ and https://twitter.com/RCMPNS.
