Residents asked to prepare in advance for the possible effects of Hurricane Fiona
The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents to prepare in advance for the effects of Hurricane Fiona.
The impacts from Hurricane Fiona are expected to arrive in the Halifax region with minor effects as early as Thursday, September 22 and more severe impacts of the storm commencing Friday, September 23 into Saturday, September 24. Hurricane Fiona will bring heavy rain, severe winds and flooding in coastal and low-lying areas.
Municipal business units are currently working together to develop a fulsome plan to prepare for any impacts from Hurricane Fiona.
At this time, it is anticipated that solid waste collection will proceed as normal on Friday, September 23. All other municipal service level adjustments, including transit and parks and recreation, will be communicated to residents with as much advanced notice as possible.
The largest threat to homes and property is flying debris. Please move umbrellas and patio furniture inside and remove anything that high winds could pick up, such as garbage containers/bags, flowerpots, toys, temporary signage, sports equipment, and any other objects located near the right of way.
To reduce the likelihood of flooding, residents who are able to do so safely are asked to clear debris from catch basins located near their property prior to the storm.
If you live on the coast or in a low-lying area near the coast, be ready to move inland or to higher ground in the event of a significant storm.
Those responsible for construction sites and other outdoor workspaces where significant debris may be present are urged to ensure their sites are clear of loose debris that could create a public safety concern.
Staff are currently reviewing options for those sheltering at the designated outdoor sheltering locations and other sites. More information will be available soon.
Safety is the municipality’s top priority. The municipality’s Emergency Management Division is actively monitoring weather forecasts and preparing accordingly.
