Special weather statement in effect
Significant rain, wind and a flash freeze is expected.
Total rainfall: 25 to 50 mm. Locally Higher amounts possible.
Maximum wind gusts: 80 to 100 km/h.
Locations: All of Nova Scotia.
Time span: Thursday night through Friday evening.
Remarks: Showers in strong southwesterly winds will transition to periods of heavy rain early Friday morning ahead of a cold front. Localized flooding is likely with heavy rain falling on the frozen snow covered ground. The public is advised to clear storm drains in advance of this system if possible to mitigate this risk.
In addition to the heavy rain, strong southwesterly winds will intensify further Thursday night into midday Friday leading to power outages.
On Friday afternoon temperatures will rapidly fall below zero from west to east with the passage of the cold front. As the front passes through the region, a brief period of freezing rain may occur before a transition to flurries. Any standing water on roads or walkways will quickly freeze leading to hazardous travel conditions. Conditions will improve Friday evening.
