RCMP charge man with arson and theft of vehicles

Meteghan RCMP has charged a man involved in an arson and a rash of stolen vehicles in Digby County.

On February 9, at approximately 1:20 p.m., police, fire and EHS responded to a report of a fire at a convenience store on Saulnierville Rd. in Saulnierville. Upon arrival, police observed that the building was fully engulfed in flames and it was unknown if anyone was inside. Police spoke with the convenience store clerk and learned that no one was inside the building. Police also learned that a man had entered the store, robbed it and then set it on fire. The fire was eventually put out and no one was injured in the incident.

On February 11, police responded to complaints of stolen vehicles in St. Alphonse and Easton. In the incident in St. Alphonse, police learned that an ATV had been stolen from a shed, and the person who committed theft, left a stolen car behind. In the incident in Easton, police learned that a man had stolen a tractor and that he was still on the property.

Police arrived at the property in Easton and located the suspect, a 35-year-old Weymouth man. Police arrested the man and transported him to the Meteghan RCMP Detachment where he was held in custody overnight.

Scott Melbourne Hill, 35, of Weymouth, has been charged with Robbery, Arson, Unlawful Confinement, Uttering Threats and Theft of Motor Vehicle (2 counts). Hill has been remanded into custody and will appear in Digby Provincial Court on February 24, 2022 at 9:30 a.m.
