Investigation begins into Complaint Against RCMP Officer

—————————————————————————-

On January 25, 2022, SiRT was contacted by the RCMP – Northeast Nova District, about an allegation of an off-duty officer uttering threats.

In the late evening of January 24th, the RCMP received a call from a friend of the Affected Party (AP) alleging a member of the RCMP, the Subject Officer (SO), had made a threat via third party and on social media to harm the AP.

In accordance with the Police Act the matter was referred to SiRT which has assumed responsibility for the investigation.

The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, which includes all allegations of domestic violence.

The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.

The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
