Old Spice and Secret Aerosol Spray Antiperspirant Products Recalled Due To Detection of Benzene

Affected products

This recall involves eight Old Spice and Secret Antiperspirant/Deodorant Spray Products that are packaged in aerosol cans.

Issue

Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin and it can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening. Based on exposure modeling and the cancer risk assessments published by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (IRIS database), daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products at the levels detected in testing would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences.

What you should do

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled product and discard them.

Consumers can also visit www.oldspice.com or www.secret.com for more information about the impacted products and to learn how to receive reimbursement for eligible products. Consumers should contact their physician or healthcare provider if they have experienced any problems that may be related to using these products.

Please note that, in addition to the requirements of the Cosmetic Regulationsthe Food and Drugs Act (FDA) prohibits the sale of cosmetics that are made either with hazardous substances, or under unsanitary conditions, to users in Canada.

Health Canada would like to remind Canadians to report any health or safety incidents related to the use of this product or any other consumer product or cosmetic by filling out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form.
