Municipal service level adjustments for Remembrance Day 2021
The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following municipal program and service level adjustments for Remembrance Day, Thursday, Nov. 11:
Solid Waste Collection and Facility Hours
No municipal garbage, organics or recyclables collection services will take place on Remembrance Day. The curbside collection of garbage, organics or recyclables normally scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 11, will occur instead on Saturday, Nov. 13. Residents are reminded that collection services can begin as early as 7 a.m.; to ensure collection, materials may be placed curbside the evening prior to collection day.
The Household Special Waste (HSW) Depot in Bayers Lake will be closed on Saturday, Nov. 13, but will be open on Saturday, Nov. 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additionally, there will be a mobile HSW event at Harold T Barrett Junior High (located at 862 Beaver Bank Road) on Saturday, Nov. 13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility, the Halifax recycling facility and municipal composting facilities will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 11, but will be open for regular hours on Saturday, Nov. 13.

Halifax Transit Bus and Ferry Services
In recognition of those who serve our country, Halifax Transit is offering free transit to all veterans and military personnel, and their accompanying family members, on Remembrance Day. On Thursday, Nov. 11, veterans and military personnel wishing to use the free transit service are asked to be in uniform or display their military identification upon boarding. This offer extends to Halifax Transit bus and harbour ferry services, as well as registered Access-A-Bus users. Residents are also advised that buses will pull over at 11 a.m. to pause for three minutes of silence, to honour and remember the men and women who serve and continue to serve.

Recreation Facilities, Programs and Services
The majority of municipally-operated recreation facilities will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 11. Please contact your individual facility in advance to confirm operating hours.
Parking
Parking will be free on Thursday, Nov. 11, however, motorists must abide by other posted signage, such as accessible parking, fire hydrants and no-stopping.
Customer Contact Centres
The 311 Contact Centre will be operating on regular hours, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., on Thursday, Nov. 11. Residents may contact 311 by phone, or by emailing contactus@311.halifax.ca. The three Customer Service Centres that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 11, and will reopen for regular business hours on Friday, Nov. 12. Remembrance Day ceremonies
Remembrance Day ceremonies are organized by The Royal Canadian Legion. Residents may contact their local Legion to learn more.

Traffic Delays – Remembrance Day
The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of a number of rolling street closures and traffic delays that will be in place across the region on Thursday, Nov. 11 to facilitate Remembrance Day parades.
Local ceremonies will be taking place to honour our veterans and those still serving with the Canadian Armed Forces.
Traffic delays will be in place at the following locations:
- Province House, Halifax (10 a.m. to 12 noon). The parade will begin at the Maritime Museum, proceed north on Lower Water Street, west on George Street and then south on Hollis Street where they will stop for the ceremony. Following the ceremony, the parade will proceed south on Hollis Street, then turn east on Prince Street before ending on Lower Water Street.
- Cenotaph at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 164, Eastern Passage (10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.). The parade will begin at 1570 Shore Road, travel north and then proceed on Main Road to Royal Canadian Legion Branch 164.
- Cenotaph at Sackville Heritage Park, Sackville (10:45 a.m. to 12 noon). The parade will proceed down Memory Lane to the Cenotaph and then return.
- Cenotaph at Earl Francis Spryfield Memorial Royal Canadian Legion, Spryfield (10:45 a.m. to 11 a.m.). The parade will begin at 315 Herring Cove Road, travel south on Herring Cove Road, west on Sussex Street to the Earl Francis Spryfield Memorial Royal Canadian Legion Hall at 7 Sussex Street.
Some events include marching back to the point of departure following the ceremony. There may also be processions not included here for events being held in other areas of the municipality.
Halifax Regional Police will be on site to escort the parades and direct traffic in the surrounding areas. Motorists are advised to obey officers on the street and watch for increased pedestrian volumes throughout the morning. Given the anticipated traffic delays, those attending Remembrance Day ceremonies are encouraged to allocate extra time in their travel plans to allow for parking.
Residents are encouraged to take a moment on Nov. 11 to remember those who have served and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace.
