Residents invited to participate in Cornwallis Street renaming

The Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting all residents to participate in an online survey, regarding the renaming of Cornwallis Street in Halifax.

As directed by Regional Council, this renaming project is one of the recommendations of the Task Force on the Commemoration of Edward Cornwallis and the Recognition and Commemoration of Indigenous History, and a step towards reconciliation. For further information on the recommendations of the Task Force, visit Halifax.ca/task-force.

All residents will have the opportunity to submit name suggestions via halifax.ca/surveys until November 12. The municipality encourages suggestions that reflect the goal of reconciliation.

Name suggestions will then be reviewed and evaluated based on appropriateness, cultural significance, diversity and originality. From this review, a short list of potential new street names will be created.

The second round of public engagement is expected to take place in 2022, and will seek feedback on resident’s preferred street name from the short list. The final step will include a staff report brought to Regional Council for deliberation and a decision.
