One Week Remaining in the 41st Provincial General Election

There is just one week remaining in the 41st provincial general election. Election day is Tuesday, August 17, 2021. Voters are encouraged to vote safely and take advantage of early voting options available at a returning offices, community polls, and advance polls, or apply to vote by write-in ballot.

As of 6 pm on Monday, August 9, 75,367 voters in Nova Scotia have casting their vote early.

To be eligible to vote for the provincial election voters must be 18 years of age or older on August 17th, a Canadian citizen, have lived in Nova Scotia since January 17, 2021.

Nova Scotia has a vote anywhere system for the early voting period. Voters can vote at any returning office or early voting location in the province until 6 pm on Saturday August 14. On Monday August 16 voters can vote at the returning office in their electoral district. On election day, voters may vote at the returning office in their electoral district or at their assigned voting location.

COVID precautions are in place at all voting locations to ensure voter safety. Voters are asked to wear a mask, sanitize their hands, maintain physical distance and bring their own pen for any paperwork. Voters will be given individual pencils to mark their ballot.

Registered voters should have received a voter information card (VIC) in the mail, which includes information on their closest voting locations. Voters should remember to bring their VIC and ID when they vote. Eligible voters can vote without a VIC if they have ID with their name and civic address or if they sign a declaration attesting to their eligibility.

Voters are reminded that the deadline return completed write-in ballots is 8 pm on election night. Voters are asked to please allow adequate time so their completed write-in ballot can be returned. If a voter does not feel there is enough time to return their completed write-in ballot by mail, they can opt to return it in-person to their returning office or have an agent return it on their behalf. Returning offices can also send election workers to pick up a completed write-in ballot if a voter is not able to return it.

Voter Information Cards (VIC)

All registered voters should have received a personalized voter information card (VIC) in the mail.

VICs include information on the closest voting locations. Voters should remember to bring their VIC and ID when they vote.

Eligible voters can vote without a VIC if they have ID with their name and civic address or if they sign a declaration attesting to their eligibility. If a voter does not have ID with their current address or name they can take an oath when the vote to attest to their eligibility.

If a voter receives a VIC with errors in it, they should bring it with them when they vote and have their information updated on the list of electors.
