Nova Scotia RCMP reminds motorists to keep focussed at the wheel
The Nova Scotia RCMP is reminding motorists about the importance of staying focussed and mindful at all times while behind the wheel. Distractions can compromise your judgment and affect your ability to drive safely.
As one of the four casual factors of fatal and serious injury collisions, distracting driving puts you and everyone on the road at risk. Distracted driving can lead to reduced reaction time, impaired judgement and serious or fatal injuries. What may seem like an insignificant act of quickly looking at your phone could mean the difference between safely avoiding an oncoming car and getting in a head-on collision.
To help avoid being distracted by a cellphone, Reduce the temptation to use it by keeping it out of sight (for example, in a bag in the backseat) and turn the ringer off. In 2020, Nova Scotia RCMP charged 947 people with using a cell phone while driving. In an effort to protect roadways, police will continue to ticket distracted drivers with a fine of $237.50 for a first offence.
“It’s important to allow enough distance between vehicles and to be prepared for the unexpected in case you need to stop quickly,” says Cpl. Mike Carter with RCMP Traffic Services. “A lot can happen in a short amount of time and in an emergency, every second counts.”
If you believe someone is driving in a way that is an immediate threat to public safety, please call 911 when it is safe to do so. Include as much detail as possible, such as the location, direction of travel, vehicle and driver description and license plate number.
