Multiple fines, charges issued for traffic infractions over eight-hour period by RCMP in Cape Breton

Over an eight-hour period on June 3, the Victoria District RCMP and the RCMP Northeast Traffic Services issued 13 fines for traffic-related offences, seized five vehicles, and arrested one man for Impaired Operation.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., a member of the Baddeck RCMP Detachment attempted to stop four motorcycles that had been driving on Highway 105 at excessive speeds. Three of the motorcycles fled from police. A second member later observed the same motorcycles further along the highway going approximately 200 km/h. Another attempt to stop them was made, and again the motorcycles fled.

With the assistance of Northeast Traffic Services, two of the three motorcycles were eventually stopped near Kempt Head Rd. The third motorcycle was later reported abandoned, and seized by police.

Two men, a 22-year-old from North Sydney and a 23-year-old from Florence, were issued multiple tickets, including operating an unregistered vehicle, driving without a motor vehicle liability policy, and failing to yield to emergency vehicle.

Just after 2:30 p.m., a member of Northeast Traffic Services stopped a vehicle on Highway 105 for going 157km/hr. The driver, a 44-year-old woman from Big Bras d’Or, was issued a ticket for stunting and her vehicle was seized.

Later that night, at 9:23 p.m., Northeast Traffic Services stopped another vehicle for excessive speed on Highway 125 in Point Edward. As a result, the driver was arrested for Impaired Operation of a Conveyance and his vehicle seized. He provided police with two breath samples of 130mg%, over one-and-a-half times the legal limit.

The 22-year-old man from Howie Centre was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Sydney Provincial Court on July 21, 2021.

If you see dangerous driving, report it to police when it is safe to do so. It is helpful to include the location of the vehicle, a description of the driver, a description of the vehicle (including license plate number, colour, make, and model), and the vehicle’s direction of travel.
