Earth Day 2021

Today is Earth Day, a globally coordinated event held every year on April 22nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection.

This year’s theme, #TakeCareofThePlanet, hopes to raise awareness among Canadians about the urgency of taking action for the environment and to encourage them to take concrete action to take care of the planet on a daily basis.

The goal is to “take care of the planet” by performing simple daily actions that can be as easy as picking up one piece of trash everyday, or as large as a riverbank cleanup.

Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970 in the United States. The first Canadian Earth Day was celebrated in Kingston, Ontario, on September 11th, 1980 as part of Canadian Earth Week. The Canadian movement was later streamlined with the American Earth Day movement in 1990. April 22nd 1990 became the “new” official Earth Day in Canada.

Over the years, Earth Day has grown to include the participation of over 1 billion people in 193 countries activities each year! Today, Earth Day represents the world’s largest environmental movement.

This year’s Earth Day Canada campaign invites everyone to share their actions on social networks using #TakeCareofthePlanet and #EarthDay2021.
