RCMP removes three drivers from road within three hours for alcohol-related offences
Halifax District RCMP removed three drivers from the roads overnight within a three-hour period for alcohol-related offences.
On March 31 at 11:15 p.m., a member was on patrol and heard tires squealing nearby. The suspect vehicle was pulled over and the driver was asked to provide a breath sample. The driver, a 43-year-old Enfield man, failed the test and was transported to Cole Harbour Detachment to provide further breath samples. He was later released and is facing charges of Impaired Operation of a Conveyance and Operating a Conveyance with a Blood Alcohol Concentration Over 80 mg and is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court on May 26 at 9:30 a.m.
At 1:20 a.m., a member pulled over a car for swerving in the lane, and the driver was asked to provide a breath sample. The roadside test produce a “warn” result, and the driver, a 48-year-old Dartmouth woman, received a seven-day suspension of her licence and her vehicle was towed.
At 2:15 a.m. a member conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle and the driver, a 20-year-old Dartmouth man, was demanded to provide a sample of his breath. Alcohol was detected, and due to the driver having a restricted licence with a zero-alcohol restriction, he was issued a 24-hour suspension of his licence.
Impaired driving continues to be an ongoing issue on Nova Scotia roadways. The Nova Scotia RCMP would like to remind motorists that if you plan to consume alcohol or cannabis, please plan for a safe ride home. If you believe someone is driving impaired, please call 911 with as many details as possible, such as location, direction of travel, vehicle description and licence plate number.
Additionally, federal legislation passed in 2018 provides for mandatory alcohol screening, which gives police the authority to demand a breath sample from any driver they have lawfully stopped, without reasonable suspicion.
