At 1:10 AM this morning, #hfxfirefighters from Stations 5 (Bayers Road) and 12 (Highfield Park) responded to a suspected carbon monoxide incident in an 18-unit apartment building on Albro Lake Rd in Dartmouth. Quick-thinking staff at Dartmouth General Hospital discovered elevated blood CO levels in a patient, prompting a call to fire.

On arrival, extremely high levels of carbon monoxide were found throughout the building—and no CO alarms were present. Our members quickly evacuated residents, and five patients in total were transported to hospital for CO poisoning. Thank you to EHS paramedics and the hospital staff for their life-saving actions.

Carbon monoxide is deadly and invisible. If you use gas-burning appliances—like furnaces, propane fireplaces, BBQs, or have an attached garage—install a CO alarm on every level of your home. Know the symptoms: headache, dizziness, nausea, and confusion.

Halifax Professional Fire Fighters urge all residents to install working CO alarms on every level of their home, especially if using gas, oil, or propane-burning appliances, or if they have an attached garage. Common symptoms of CO poisoning include headache, dizziness, nausea, and confusion. We thank our responding members, the EHS paramedics, and staff at Dartmouth General Hospital for their coordinated and professional response.
