Our first orphaned fox pup of the year arrived yesterday!
He’s about 3 to 4 weeks old, and came in weighing 640 grams. Other than being moderately dehydrated and a bit on the thin side, he’s healthy. And he knows what he wants! He’s chewed right through some formula bottle nipples, so we moved him right on to solid food. He went right for the meat and ate it like it was going out of style. And he will eat a lot! Multiple feedings a day for a while, eventually putting on 3 or 4 kg over several months before being able to be released.
We get an average of 25 foxes a year, and the majority of them are orphans. Our spring 50/50 raffle is one of the main ways we raise money to help feed and raise the hundreds of orphaned animals we are preparing to get. Last spring we had 900 patients in care at once, and the bulk of them were orphans. That’s a lot of food that needs to be on the menu.
