Mange is a terrible disease. It’s caused by parasitic mites burrowing in or living on the skin, and it causes intense pain, itching, swelling, and crusting of the skin. And, as with this poor porcupine, hair and quill loss. It’s often fatal.
This porky came to us back in September, and we started her on a treatment program that works at targeting the mites, controlling infection, and pain management. The mites have a 21 day life cycle, so it take weeks of treatment before we’re sure we got them all.
Happy ending! After finishing growing back her fur and quills, the little one went home. She seemed very excited to be back in the wild and climbed way up in the trees to get a good view of the area.
