SIRT Terminates Investigation

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has terminated an investigation related to a male who sustained injuries on May 16, 2024, in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

On that date, the Lunenburg District RCMP received a complaint of a male in distress and causing damage to his property. When police arrived, they observed a male in an agitated state and noted serious injuries to his body.  An officer discharged his taser and placed the male under arrest.

The SiRT conducted a preliminary investigation into the matter and learned that the serious injuries sustained by the male were self-inflicted and not a result of the actions of a police officer. On this basis, the Director found the incident no longer met the SiRT mandate. The investigation has been terminated and the file has been closed.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
