Attention all trail users!
As temperatures rise, we are experiencing more opportunities to enjoy our beautiful trails and waterways. Unfortunately, warmer temperatures mean we are moving into tick season as well…
Pictured above is an adult female “Lone Star” tick, distinguished by the unique white mark on it’s back. Our usual tick species of concern is the Black-Legged tick which is found in abundance throughout the province and carries Lyme disease. However, due to a recent surge in deer population, Canadians are encountering the Lone Star tick, normally found in the southeastern United States. A bite from these pesky critters poses the risk of many health complications in addition to Lyme disease, such as developing an allergy to meat (CTV, 2024).
*Be sure to follow the tick bite prevention and treatment guidelines set out by Health Canada as they are effective for all species of tick*
