New Supportive Housing in Dartmouth

New supportive housing for seniors and people living with developmental disabilities will soon be available in Dartmouth with funding from three levels of government.
Main Street Centre, a seven-storey, 45-unit mixed-use housing project, is being built by Affirmative Ventures at 139 Main St. It will provide a range of housing and independent living supports for residents, including 12 accessible and 25 affordable units.
“Having a safe, supportive home means more than having four walls and a roof,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Timothy Halman, MLA for Dartmouth East, on behalf of John Lohr, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “We’re pleased to play a role in creating inclusive, welcoming communities where the residents are able to grow, feel secure and thrive.”
The total project cost is more than $16.6 million, with completion expected in early 2025. The Province is investing more than $4.7 million through the Affordable Housing Development Program, with more than $11.8 million from the Government of Canada’s Affordable Housing Fund and more than $162,000 from the Halifax Regional Municipality.

MP DARREN FISHER DELIVERS MORE FUNDING FOR HOUSING IN DARTMOUTH
Today, Darren Fisher, Member of Parliament for Dartmouth—Cole Harbour announced over $11 million in funding to support the construction of Affirmative Ventures’ Main Street Centre, to provide 45 homes for seniors and persons with disabilities.
With additional investments from the Province of Nova Scotia, the Halifax Regional Municipality, and Affirmative Ventures, this $16 million, seven-story mixed-use housing project, will be a mixture of affordable and much-needed seniors housing.
The development will include 25 affordable units plus 20 units that will be offered for market rent. One dozen units will be fully accessible with grade level storefront access to Main Street and at the back of the building (basement level) and to outdoor parking. At the back of the building, ten units of supportive housing run by Affirmative Housing will have seamless interface with Main Street Centre.
Building amenities include supports for persons with developmental disabilities, service to support seniors aging in place, walking distance to local businesses, Halifax Transit stops and dedicated bike storage.
A breakdown of funding for this project includes:
- $11.8 million from the Government of Canada’s Affordable Housing Fund (AHF)
- $73,000 in SEED funding
- $4.7 million from Province of Nova Scotia
- $162,636 from Halifax Regional Municipality
- $102,000 in Land Equity from Affirmative Ventures Association
