We spoke to Hope from Hope for Wildlife about their involvement in helping through the wildfires in Nova Scotia. Here’s a few points from our chat.
Hope has had an increase in calls requesting help for wildlife.
This is an especially hard time of year with many animals now having young, many immobile such as bird hatchlings and porcupines.
Motorists should be extra vigilantes in areas around affected fire zones as many animals are fleeing the fires
Be aware that wandering wildlife may increase in areas outside of the affected fire zones as exhausted wildlife will be looking for food, water and shelter. Avoid pet interaction with these stressed animals.
Two fawns were rescued by police in the Shelburne area and have been introduced to a herd at Hope. Hope herself has been feeding the newborns and say they are doing well.
Donations help. A lot of resources go into rescuing wildlife. Cash and food such as eggs and green vegetables are most welcome.
