Nova Scotia RCMP refer death of man to Serious Incident Response Team after officers discharged firearms while responding to an incident involving a handgun

Earlier this evening Halifax District RCMP responded to a residence in Eastern Passage for a call of an armed man who was uttering threats.

When police arrived, they located the man, a 60-year-old from Eastern Passage, armed with a handgun outside the residence. The man did not respond to officers’ directions. After a short time, the man raised his handgun towards the responding officers. Responding officers discharged their firearms. EHS attended and the man was pronounced deceased at the scene. No one else was injured.

Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased at this difficult time.

The investigation is ongoing. Halifax District RCMP have referred the matter the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT). The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) independently investigates all serious incidents which arise from the actions of police in Nova Scotia. There does not have to be an allegation of wrongdoing.

Given the matter is now being investigated by SiRT, the RCMP is unable to discuss further details.
