Mya is from Glen Haven, Nova Scotia and graduated from Camp Courage class of 2017
My name is Mya and in 2017 I was very lucky to have been selected to participate in Camp Courage. It was obvious from the very beginning how much love and energy Andrea put into organizing this Camp for young women; to learn about and experience the different first responders emergency services.
Andrea has done an amazing job creating it, and supporting the emergency services by giving an opportunity for youths to better understand the role and responsibilities of the different careers.
Going into the Camp, I was very nervous and shy, but once I had finished it, I felt better about myself. I feel the Camp helped me with my confidence and my ability to adjust and be open minded to new people and experiences. I was able to meet other youths who were like-minded, and still meet up with some of my co-campers I met last year. Thought out the Camp we learned life skills, problem solving, as well as skills that are used daily in the emergency services. We learned how to work as a team, were exposed to many scenarios, and we did a ‘Mega Code’ at the end of the week. That was amazing! Not only did I meet great people, volunteers, learn about Paramedicine, Policing, and Fire Fighting; Camp Courage was also approved by my school (Sir John A MacDonald High School) as a Co-op Credit.
I hope that other girls continue to have the same opportunity I had to learn about the different emergency services. Sincerely, Mya
