Municipal service level adjustments for Natal Day weekend 2022

The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following municipal program and service level adjustments over the upcoming Natal Day long weekend:

Halifax Transit Bus and Ferry Services

Halifax Transit buses will be operating on holiday service on Monday, August 1.

On Saturday, July 30, Alderney Ferry service will run at half-hour frequency from 6:30 a.m. until noon, 15-minute frequency from 12:15 p.m. to 11 p.m., and half-hour frequency from 11 p.m. to midnight.

On Monday, August 1, Alderney Ferry service will run at half-hour frequency. The first crossing will depart the Alderney terminal at 7:30 a.m. and the final crossing will depart the Halifax terminal at 11:45 p.m.

Residents are reminded that Halifax Transit will be offering free transit service on Fridays and free Alderney Ferry service on Saturdays this summer as part of the municipality’s Free Fares Fridays & Free Sail Saturdays program.

Solid Waste Collection and Facility Hours

No municipal solid waste collection service will take place on Natal Day, Monday, August 1.

Curbside collection of garbage, organics or recyclables normally scheduled for Monday, August 1 will occur on the preceding Saturday, July 30. Residents are reminded that collection services can begin as early as 7 a.m. To guarantee collection, residents are asked to place materials curbside prior to 7 a.m. on collection day, ensuring they are contained and secured from wildlife until pickup.

The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility, the Halifax recycling facility and municipal composting facilities will be closed on Monday, August 1, but will be open for regular hours on Saturday, July 30 and Tuesday, August 2.

The Household Special Waste Depot in Bayers Lake will be closed on Saturday, July 30 but will be open on Saturday, August 6.

A mobile Household Special Waste Depot will be held on Saturday, July 30 at Saint Mary’s University, 960 Tower Road (use Inglis Street entrance), Halifax, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine.

Customer Contact Centres

 

The 311 Contact Centre will be operating from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, August 1.

The three Customer Service Centres that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed on Monday, August 1, and will reop­en for regular business hours on Tuesday, August 2.

Parking

On-street paid parking will be free on Monday, August 1. Motorists are reminded to abide by other posted signage, including no-parking zones.

Recreation Facilities, Programs and Services

 

All municipal beaches will remain open with lifeguard supervision on Monday, August 1. All splash pad locations will be open on Monday, August 1. Cole Harbour Outdoor Pool and Bedford Outdoor Pool will be open on Monday, August 1. For a complete list of supervised beaches, up-to-date beach closures, splash pads and outdoor pools, click here.

Residents are reminded that the Halifax Common Pool will remain closed for the rest of the summer due to the construction of the new Halifax Commons Aquatic Centre, which is expected to open in summer 2023.

The Emera Oval will be open on Monday, August. 1. A detailed schedule can be found here. Equipment lending will be open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., weather permitting.

Residents are reminded that they may continue to use REC at Home which offers a variety of activities that you can enjoy with your family – from arts and crafts, to at-home workouts.

Note: Many other municipally-operated recreation facilities will be closed on Monday, August. 1. Residents are advised to call ahead to their respective facility for operating hours and program information. Contact information for municipally-operated facilities is online.

Residents are reminded of the following activities taking place in the municipality:

Buskers Festival – Wednesday, July 27 until Monday, August 1. Location: Halifax and Dartmouth waterfronts. For more details visit www.buskers.ca.

Halifax-Dartmouth Natal Day Harbour Fireworks – Saturday, July 30 at 10 p.m. (Rain date: Sunday, July 31 at 10 p.m.)

16th Annual African Nova Scotian Music Association ‘Freedom Festival’ Concert – Sunday, July 31 from 1:30 pm until 9:30 pm. Location: Dartmouth Ferry Terminal Park.

Macdonald Bridge Walk – Sunday, July 31 at 2 p.m. Location: Macdonald Bridge.

Dartmouth Natal Day Road Race – Monday, August 1 at 8 a.m. Visit www.natalday.org.

Pepsi Natal Day Parade – Monday, August 1 at 10 a.m.
