Statement regarding ongoing efforts to address homelessness in the Halifax region
The following is a statement from the Halifax Regional Municipality regarding the ongoing efforts to help the Province of Nova Scotia address homelessness in our region.
The municipality expects installation for the majority of modular units (providing access to 24 of the total 26 spaces) at the Dartmouth site, located on Alderney Drive near Church Street to be completed tomorrow. This will allow the province to facilitate next steps for occupancy. Modification of the modular unit to accommodate the two barrier-free bedrooms (with total capacity for two individuals) and single washroom is ongoing and is anticipated to be ready for occupancy by late January.
It’s important to note that exact timing of occupancy is dependent upon the province, which is responsible for determining placement of individuals and providing wrap-around services onsite through its service provider (Out of the Cold). Gray Arena will remain operational until alternate accommodations have been offered by the province to all individuals currently at that location.
Once the Dartmouth site is complete, the municipality will shift its focus on completing the Halifax modular unit site. More information about the status of efforts is available here on halifax.ca.
Municipal staff continue to have contact and meet regularly with the province and community-based service providers to advance our collective efforts.
Emergency accommodations during severe weather events
During severe weather events, the municipality supports the province by providing municipal buildings for temporary emergency shelters to occupants of homeless encampments. Temporary emergency shelters are stood up when the temperatures are -15 degrees Celsius or below and/or snowfall amounts are 25 cm or greater. Those at the shelter are provided with comfort kits and food.
Due to the temperatures expected over the coming days, a temporary emergency shelter will be open for tonight and tomorrow night.
