Firefighters step up for lung health as part of the 2nd annual Stair Heroes challenge

Nova Scotians and Islanders are invited to attend the 2nd annual stair climb challenge being hosted in Halifax on February 19th, 2023.

The Stair Heroes challenge, which is a partnership between the Lung Association of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island (LANSPEI) and Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency (HRFE), is intended to bring awareness and raise funds for lung health in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

“We’re excited to have the opportunity to host this event again,” said Robert MacDonald, President & CEO of the Lung Association of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. “COVID-19 has placed a significant strain on lung health, and we’re pleased to be hosting an event that will support people with respiratory issues.”

The event will take place in Barrington Tower, Scotia Square Mall and will see up to 400 participants climb this notable building in support of lung health. Registration for the Stair Heroes event is now open. The cost is $30 per participant.

“We are hoping participants will raise $200 each to support this fundraising initiative,” said MacDonald. “We really hope people will understand how this event helps us continue delivering programs and services for people with lung disease.”

“Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency is once again pleased to be partnering with the Lung Association of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island on this event,” said Ken Stuebing, Halifax Regional Fire Chief. “Firefighters know the importance of lung health and climbing Barrington Tower in full gear is one of the ways we are committed to giving back and raising awareness about this important issue.”

“This stair climb challenge will be physically challenging for our firefighters and will push their bodies to the limit,” said Stuebing. “We hope others will appreciate the importance of this event and step up with us to support lung health.”

The Stair Heroes event will be a chip-timed event with waves for the public as well as special challenges for first responders, politicians, and gyms. The event itself will be family-friendly and will feature music, face painting, special guests, and more. Registration for the Stair Heroes event can be done online at www.StairHeroes.ca
