SiRT Concludes Investigation into Serious Injury Sustained During an Arrest in Halifax
———————————————————-

The Director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) found no reasonable grounds to believe Halifax Regional Police (HRP) officers acted with excessive force during an arrest in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

On January 5, 2025, HRP were investigating an incident involving and adult male who was in violation of a court imposed no contact order. At the time, the male was standing trial for several serious criminal charges related to the individual he was not permitted to contact or be around. It was believed that the male was at the residence of the person he was not to be in contact with, at which time members of HRP responded immediately and located the male in the residence. The male resisted arrest and was taken to the ground in a controlled manner.  He was transported to HRP’s Prisoner Care Facility (PCF) and complained of pain in his arm. Emergency Health Services (EHS) attended the PCF and transported the male to hospital. At the hospital it was determined that the male had sustained a fractured and dislocated right elbow.

On January 5, 2025, SiRT received a referral from HRP and began their investigation.

The Director’s summary report is available at: Recent Publications | SiRT.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
