New security measures for Dartmouth General Hospital emergency department

New security measures are coming to Dartmouth General Hospital’s emergency department (ED) to keep patients, families, and care providers safer.

Beginning this week, anyone entering the hospital’s emergency department will be searched with hand-held metal-detecting wands and can expect to have their personal belongings searched for dangerous objects. Any weapons – or objects that could be used as a weapon – will be confiscated.

Dangerous items will be returned safely and securely outside of the ED area.

We ask that an ED visit be treated the same as the process for airport security clearance. Patients and visitors can be prepared and minimize the wait by leaving weapons at home, in a vehicle or with a trusted person while at the hospital. Entry will be quicker if everyone cooperates.

Discretion will be used by security staff if a patient arriving at the hospital needs urgent and immediate attention. Emergency care will not be delayed.

Nova Scotia Health asks for patience and understanding as these new security policies are implemented. These new measures aim to ensure everyone feels safe while being treated or working in the hospital.
