Updates on fall recreation

The following is an update on fall recreation programming and the reopening of facilities.

Recreation programming

Fall recreation programming will be returning across the region, with registration opening on Thursday, Oct. 8.

Programs will be viewable online as of Thursday, Oct. 1 on halifax.ca/myREC. All programs will begin the week of Monday, October 19 and will run for eight weeks.

Preschool, child, youth and adult program registration will open at 10 a.m. and aquatics and skating program registration will open at 2 p.m.

Participants can register by phone at (902)-490-6666online or in person at the following locations:

  • George Dixon Community Centre
  • Sackville Sports Stadium
  • Musquodoboit Harbour Recreation Centre
  • Findlay Community Centre
  • Chocolate Lake Recreation Centre
  • Captain William Spry Community Centre

The municipality is following a phased approach, and not all programs will be returning for the fall. Staff will continue to assess programming options heading into the winter season. A reduced number of fall programs will be offered to allow for required cleaning measures.

Recreation Centre Reopenings

All municipally-operated recreation centres will be reopening as of Thursday, Oct. 15. Reopening plans for each facility, as well as municipal partner facilities, may vary and residents are asked to contact their local recreation centre for further details. Residents are also reminded to follow all public health protocols, including wearing a mask while indoors and in all common areas of the facility.

Access to fitness centres, pools and attendance in fitness class will be available by appointment only to ensure safety and proper public health protocols. Appointments may be booked over the phone or online through halifax.ca/myREC.

Arenas and spectators

All municipally owned arenas are expected to be open, with ice access, by Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020.

One spectator per participant will now be permitted in municipally owned arenas, subject to facility capacity. Spectators must abide by all facility and public health rules including wearing a mask and physical distancing. Restrictions may be reinstituted if spectators do not abide by facility and public health guidelines.
