LungNSPEI, in partnership with the Province of Nova Scotia, Launches Innovative Pilot Program for Equitable Access to Radon Testing and Mitigation

LungNSPEI, in partnership with the Government of Nova Scotia, is proud to announce the launch of a groundbreaking initiative aimed at ensuring equitable access to radon testing and mitigation services across the province. This pilot program was supported with $386,900 in funding from the Government of Nova Scotia, and will be expertly delivered by LungNSPEI, a leading organization dedicated to respiratory health.

Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas, is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, making it a serious health concern. Recognizing the importance of addressing this public health challenge, the Government of Nova Scotia has allocated funding to establish a pilot program that will provide accessible radon testing and mitigation services to lower-income residents throughout Nova Scotia.

The pilot program is designed to make radon testing and mitigation more affordable and accessible for low-income households. Through strategic partnerships and community outreach efforts, the initiative aims to raise awareness about the dangers of radon exposure and promote preventive measures.

“The health and well-being of Nova Scotians are of utmost importance to us,” said Dr. Robert Strang, Chief Medical Officer of Health and Chair of the Nova Scotia Provincial Radon Working Group. “Radon is a silent threat that can have severe consequences, and we are committed to taking proactive measures to protect our citizens. This pilot program represents a significant step towards ensuring that all residents, regardless of their economic circumstances, have access to essential radon testing and mitigation services. By addressing this issue head-on, we are working towards creating healthier and safer homes for everyone in Nova Scotia.”

“LungNSPEI is pleased to partner with the Government of Nova Scotia to deliver this crucial program,” said Robert MacDonald, President and CEO of LungNSPEI. “Radon is a serious health hazard, and we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to live in a radon-free environment. This initiative aligns with our mission to improve respiratory health in the region, and we are committed to leveraging our expertise to ensure that radon testing and mitigation services are readily available to those who need them. Together, we can make significant strides in safeguarding the lung health of all Nova Scotians.”

The pilot program’s launch marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance public health and safety across Nova Scotia. The Government of Nova Scotia and LungNSPEI invite residents to learn more about radon, take advantage of the program’s services, and take proactive steps to create healthier living environments.
