In photos – Members of HRFE and Sydney Fire were on scene of a pretty serious structure collapse today, but it was all in training and qualification.
With returning instructors from SPEC Rescue, 20 new members took weeks of training into a realistic practical setting.
A building collapsed after a vehicle crashed into it, creating heavy obstacles preventing occupants from being safely rescued in a conventional way.
The new members of CANTF5 swung into action using a wide variety of tools at their disposal, slowly entering the structure to cut and hack through the thick cement and wooden hazards, at times in extremely claustrophobic conditions, eventually making their way to victims in various states of health while securing structures as they move along to ensure safe movement for rescuers and removal of the victims trapped inside.

About HUSAR
**** Info via Canada.ca
funding to HUSAR Task Forces in Vancouver (British Columbia); Toronto (Ontario); Calgary (Alberta); and the Province of Manitoba, as well as supporting the development of HUSAR capacity in Halifax (Nova Scotia) and Montreal (Quebec).
Program Description and Objectives
The HUSAR Program aims to maintain the HUSAR capabilities of Canadian HUSAR Task Forces in Vancouver (British Columbia); Calgary (Alberta); the Province of Manitoba; and Toronto (Ontario).
The Program also aims to develop HUSAR capacity and capability in the underserved regions of Montreal (Quebec) and Halifax (Nova Scotia).
Canada’s national approach to emergency management needs to be reflective of the needs of all partners, and the changing risk environment.
As growing cities, aging infrastructure and climate variability increase across the country, ensuring sufficient HUSAR capacity is increasingly important.
This program will:
- Support provinces and municipalities in obtaining the equipment and specialized training needed to sustain HUSAR capacity;
- Support investments in areas that will lead to timely and effective HUSAR response capabilities; and
- Support facilitating interoperability among the Task Forces.
