Saint Barbara’s Day Gunnery Competition

Residents in the vicinity of Canadian Forces Base Halifax and His Majesty’s Canadian Dockyard are to be advised that during the morning of Friday, December 1, 2023, the Saint Barbara’s Day gunnery competition will take place aboard Canada’s Naval Memorial HMCS Sackville. Any loud bangs or noises are a result of competition crews firing blank rounds toward the Halifax Harbour. Any inconvenience is regretted.

The competition is named after Saint Barbara who is considered the patron Saint of all gunners and consists of four person teams who get four to five rounds to show effective naval gunnery drill, spirit and imagination. Costumes are greatly endorsed. They are judged by an exclusive panel of retired gunners and the winners get to claim the Saint Barbara’s day trophy until the next competition.
